Rice to Riches

Rice is the thread that binds Asia. In Asia, rice is life. Over the centuries, the grain had such an enormous influence on the Asian diet, cultures, traditions and economies that many had regarded it as a symbol of prosperity.

In Sri Lanka, a family’s wealth was determined by the quantity of rice they possessed. In the Japanese feudal period, the chiefs were ranked based on their rice yield. Koreans believed that a baby would become rich if the child had chosen rice over the other objects placed on the table in a special ceremony. According to Fengshui beliefs, a full rice container represents abundance and an affluent household.

Traditional rice ceremonies are still celebrated in some parts of Asia today to ensure healthy harvests and rice aplenty, which is believed to be the foundation of a vibrant and prosperous society.
